DR JOSEPH ESSANDOH

Dr. Joseph Essandoh-Yeddu is the Director for Strategic Planning and Policy at the Ghana Energy Commission. His main responsibilities include making energy forecast for the country and ensuring that annual updates of the country’s energy statistics.
He led the team that developed Ghana’s first Strategic National Energy Plan (SNEP: 2006-2020) and also leading the team updating it to cover up to 2030, a task expected to be completed this year.
He is member of Ghana’s team to the UN Climate Change negotiations. He was a Lead Author in the IPCC (i.e. the UN Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change) Working Group Three of its fifth Assessment Report and now he has been selected as Review Author/Editor for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. He is one three Ghanaians appointed by the IPCC to the Working Group III, in its contribution to the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) from 2018-2021. Dr Essandoh-Yeddu would work as a Review Editor for the “Energy Systems Chapter”.
He was a peer-reviewer for IEA (International Energy Agency)’s 2014 World and African Energy Outlooks.
Dr. Essandoh-Yeddu has BSc physics, an MSc. in Engineering with specialization in Energy & Environment from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and a PhD in Physics with specialization in Climate Change & Geosciences from the University of Texas at Austin, USA and the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. He was a Burns Visiting Scholar on Sustainable Energy Solutions to the University of Lethbridge, Canada and to the Centre for Petroleum, Energy Economics and Law (CPEEL) at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 2014 and 2015-2016 respectively. He has authored a number of papers and made presentations on sustainable energy development.
He is currently the lead person on Energy in Ghana’s National Committee on SDGs and also for Ghana and the African Group at the UNFCCC negotiations.
